Courtyard Garden

Wide paths and soft planting break up the space
Wide paths and soft planting break up the space

The Brief

To make a courtyard garden that unified the space between the old and new buildings and the garden surrounding the property. This is a garden for a young, growing family so we had to maintain easy access for buggies and bikes etc with child friendly planting.

Solution

The newly built annexe created a courtyard effect that faced south. Compressed gravel was used on the curved wide paths and a central island bed was designed with a crab apple tree as the focal point. The multi-stemmed trunks gave unusual vertical interest and provided a translucent screen between the buildings. The tree was underplanted with soft grasses and perennials for texture and movement, and fragrant herbs planted close to the kitchen and eating areas.

Roses, wisteria and honeysuckle were trained up the walls of the all the buildings to complement the country cottage style.
